Zohran Mamdani affirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, did not confirm he would live there immediately following his victory in November.
"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Campaign Controversy
In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment although he hails from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
