Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates club history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
