Great Britain's Olympic and Paralympic squads must adopt AI and encourage increased teamwork to maintain their current high-level performance, as stated by the nation's elite sport agency chairman Nick Webborn.
"We have been an exceptionally successful nation, and to keep that standing or to possibly go higher, we're going to have to operate in new ways," he stated.
He emphasized the importance to "think smarter" and "utilize things like AI appropriately in sport," as well as enhancing cooperation among various governing organizations.
Harnessing Technology for Performance
Webborn's vision goes beyond podium ambitions. He pointed to several crucial areas where AI could offer significant benefits:
- Scouting New Talent: Employing analytics to discover potential athletes.
- Reducing Injuries: Forecasting and mitigating injury risks via biomechanical tracking.
- Virtual Assessment: Enabling fair classification for Paralympic athletes removing the need for extensive journeys.
This comes after a previous announcement that British competitors would be offered AI-based safeguards against online abuse.
Reviewing Past Games Results
While Team GB won 65 podium finishes at the Paris 2024 Olympics, equalling their London 2012 haul, their gold medal tally of 14 saw them drop to seventh in the overall rankings.
"Our aim is to continue exceeding expectations," said Webborn. "The focus is on those small things, how we turn those silvers into gold."
He also commended the ParalympicsGB squad, which has consistently finished second after China, while observing that international rivals are closing the gap.
Competitor Well-being as a Cornerstone
During his initial discussion since taking up the role, Webborn placed significant importance on athlete care and post-career development.
"Supporting the athletes who enter our high-performance program... getting them ready for their later life, so that the skills they acquire help them become a better individual... remains extremely important to me," Webborn stated.
Webborn suggested that a caring environment doesn't just fosters better athletes but also more resilient people for the future.
Upcoming Ambitions and Staging Major Events
Looking ahead, UK Sport is focused on bringing world-class events to the UK. Confirmed events include the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.
The chairman further expressed a future "desire" to host the Summer Games again, possibly around 2040.
"Wasn't that brilliant in 2012? I'd love for more people of the British public to experience those moments too," he reflected.
He mentioned that a future bid could be innovative, maybe featuring multiple host cities like Liverpool and Manchester working together.
