Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
