New Year Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Expected Throughout the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Events Continue Despite Forecasts
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the weather service.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, meaning warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
- Commuting is expected to be impacted.
- The public have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network.
Temperatures Expected to Drop Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Advisories Issued
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this signified the weather was expected to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely paramount.
