Democratic officials demonstrated anger after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The clip, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past worked in armed forces or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all made an vow to defend and support this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that break the statutes or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Furious Reply
The video message reportedly provoke a heated response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined statement censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous national pride and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged digital publications and recant his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a statement.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who value this United States and took an vow to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the constitution and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "All citizens must come together and denounce the president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the death of public representatives."
He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."
The GOP leader justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "There are active officials of the federal government who coordinated to organize a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the president's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in casualties, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
