Guehi's late header clinches Crystal Palace victory over Fulham
With a top-four position, stellar players, and a brilliant manager, Palace are enjoying an unprecedented Premier League era.
Marc Guehi's stoppage-time header earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Fulham, moving Palace into the top four.
With 26 points from their first 15 games, a club best, Palace have firmly entered the conversation for a place in next season's Champions League.
Opening the scoring in his 50th game, Eddie Nketiah spoke of limitless potential, with manager Oliver Glasner also quick to applaud his squad's efforts.
"It was a monumental team performance, and I'm incredibly proud of every player, he said. "That's why we are where we are.
Yet, this praise follows closely on the heels of Glasner's frank critique of the club's lack of summer spending after a defeat to Manchester United.
With his contract expiring at season's end and uncertainty surrounding key players like Guehi and Adam Wharton, underlying concerns persist at Selhurst Park.
Will the club's hierarchy manage to keep hold of the transformative manager? Furthermore, is this squad capable of maintaining its form to create a legendary campaign?
'An Unprecedented Managerial Era'
Glasner's appointment in early 2024, following notable achievements in the Bundesliga, marked a turning point for the club.
The 51-year-old has since guided the club to consecutive record Premier League points totals and delivered a first major trophy with an FA Cup victory over Manchester City last season.
This success opened the door to European football and was complemented by a Community Shield win against the league champions.
A prominent pundit remarked: "This is undoubtedly the greatest manager and squad in the history of Crystal Palace. Fans could never have dreamed of such success before his appointment."
The home ground had been an impenetrable stronghold this league season until a recent loss ended that run.
Their away form, however, might be even more impressive.
Since Glasner's first match in March 2024, only Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City have accrued more Premier League points on the road than Crystal Palace.
Yet, the loss to Manchester United prompted Glasner to voice his frustration, suggesting the club-record funds from a summer sale were not reinvested to strengthen the squad.
Defeats after European commitments have exposed the limitations of a squad stretched by competing on multiple fronts.
Glasner pointedly stated the club had "squandered" the opportunity for an even better season by not spending. A pundit noted: "He is forthright in his criticism after poor results... The board likely has to tolerate it given his monumental status at the club."
Insufficient Depth for a Packed Schedule
Clearly, Glasner possesses a deeply ambitious vision for the club.
It also seems apparent that he believes a lack of squad depth is restricting progress, and his comments may be intended to prompt activity in the January transfer window.
With Glasner's contract set to expire in June, the club's ambitions must quickly align with the manager's if the current success is to be prolonged.
A former professional goalkeeper commented: "The contract talk is a huge topic... The board should be desperate to secure his future. His achievements have been extraordinary. His reaction to a defeat showed he feels unsupported. The board's actions in the near future will be crucial."
Guehi is another player out of contract soon, and speculation linking him with elite clubs will only intensify.
Creative midfielder Adam Wharton is also the subject of considerable demand from several clubs.
Meanwhile, other key players like Ismaila Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta will undoubtedly aspire to play in the Champions League.
"The lack of size in the squad hampers rest and recovery. Achieving a European place would be fantastic, but the competition is fierce," the pundit added.
While this is Palace's most glorious period, it is also a fragile one, with the specter of a breakup threatening to derail a magnificent season.
