British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
