There are "no plans" for US President President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital soon to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The White House declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders indicating the president had pressured him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump endorsed a truce plan supported by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.

Russia has consistently objected against pausing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He also said the sole subject that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday occurred before reports that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in diplomacy", he remarked.
