Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
